Obituary

Dr Arthur Victor Huygens
3 September 1944 - 24 October 2024

Arthur Huygens passed away on October 24, 2024 at the age of 80 in his hometown of IJsselstein. His battle with serious medical problems in recent years showed his courage to face life’s challenges with a smile.

This is how many of us remember this remarkable epi member and former President.

Arthur was just in time to qualify and register before the Dutch Patent Office to become an epi “grandfather” from the opening of the list at the end of 1977.

He had started his career in industry, first at “Gist-Brocades”, later for Akzo, where he was known both for his skills as a creative patent attorney, and for his musical performances as a bassoonist. After his retirement he founded his own firm and remained active in the profession until the very end.

As hinted before, Arthur was an active epi member; he joined the board in 1995, and was epi’s President from 1997-1999.

After that he stayed active as a member of Examination Committee II, for Paper C, with some interruptions, for a good part of the last 20 years, until his death. The committee shared many heartwarming responses; from his valuable contributions and sharing of experience, to his sense of humour, good mood and drive to do the right thing.

If he saw something that wasn’t right, he went after it, even it did not affect him. Why? He would say: This is how I am. A true fighter in many ways.

It has been a privilege to have known him.

Tiem Reijns, epi Vice-President
